Message Post

Once you retrieve a message, either by clicking on it from the category list or another link in or outside the system, you will be taken to the message post page. This page is available to all users, registered or just visitors to the community. However, some actions on the page are only available to registered users in the community. If you are not a member, we encourage you to register, its free, and allow you more interaction with each message post and the community as a whole.

Reading Message

Every message post in the system has the same layout for familiarity and ease of use. On the top there is an information bar, providing stats about each message, followed by the subject, message attributes, categorization and location information, then social bookmark features, comments, and a task pane on the side which allows for more interactive features with each post.

Message Information Bar

At the top of each message post is an information bar which provides a synopsis of how this message has been interacted with in the community.

The following items can be found in the bar:

  • Record Number – default row number as retrieved form the system based on sort order.
  • Viewed – the total number of times this message has been viewed in detail
  • Rating – the average user rating given to the message post (ratings are unique per user, and users have to be logged in, in order to rate posts). The stars represent the average rating rounded up to the nearest whole number. The number in parenthesis represents the total number of users who rated the message.
  • Comments – comments added to each message post by community users. Comments can be added by registered and non-registered users
  • Linked – is a count of people who elected to use a social bookmarking icon to bookmark a message post.
  • Distance – the distance number represents approximate mileage between your search postal/zip code and the postal/zip code for the message post. If you click on the distance, an external map showing an approximate distance and route.

Message Information

Below the message bar is the entire message post

  • Subject – each message has its own subject (title) which is displayed on top
  • Author – this is the message’s composer, shown as their unique username in the system
  • Post Creation Date – Time – Each post has a created date/time (Central Time US), when the message was first created.
  • Online, Message User – if the message’s author is online, an icon will appear, allowing you to internet messaging the user directly, and hold a conversation.
  • Attributes – if a message post has any associated attributes with it, they will be listed here, like 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, etc.
  • Age – if the author provided an age, it will be listed here
  • Amount – if the author provided an amount, it will be listed here
  • Event Date-Time - if the author provided an event date and time, it will be listed here. The date and time will be local associated with the location of post.
  • Message Body – the first couple of lines of the message post will be shown, as for the whole message, the you may need to click into the message to get the whole detail
  • Categorization – each message in the community has its own classification of category and optionally, sub-category. You can click on the category or subcategory, to retrieve a list of similar messages in the Category List page
  • Location – The location link shows the approximate location of the message post, and links out to a map showing its approximate location.

Task Pane

The Task Pane located on the right side of the message provides an interactive experience with each message. These features allow you to print, email, respond, add to favorites, flag and rate a message post accordingly. The message is available to view for all users in the community; however some of the actions in the task pane are limited to registered users only.

Forwarding a Messages Post

You may come across a post which you feel might be useful to your friends. You can forward such posts and let your friends know about the information or opportunity. However, you need to register yourself in order to forward a post. You can navigate to the Posts module after logging in. When you open a post to view its description, you can find a task pane displayed. Using the options of this task pane, you can mail the message in the post to a friend, reply to the author of the mail, report a post, and add a post to your favorites list.

To forward a message post:

  • Select a post of your interest and click the post link to view its full description. You can find the task pane displayed to the right of the description.

  • Click Email Message on the task pane. The Email message page with Email options is displayed.

  • Click Send.
  • The confirmation message is displayed on the screen.
  • Your email comments along with a link will be sent to the individual email address you entered.

Printing a Message

Although you can print any screen in community, Close by Me provides a clean version of any message post you are reading without all the extra web page information.  All you have to do is click on the print message button and a new window will pop-up, allowing you to print the message from your own printer.

To print message post:

  • Select a post of your interest and click the print message in the task pane. You can find the task pane displayed to the right of the description.
  • A new window will open up; from there you can select print from the browser window.

Replying to the Author’s Message Post

One of the best features of Close by Me is its ability to interact with other users in the community. Within a message, you have the ability to respond to the author of the message post. You can respond to a post directly by replying to the author of the post through mails. However, you need to register to mail the author. You can navigate to the message posts section after logging in. When you open a post to view its description, you can find a task pane displayed. Using the options of this task pane, you can mail the message in the post to a friend, reply to the author of the mail, report a post, and add a post to your favorites list.

To reply to a message post and email author:

  • Select a post of your interest and click the post link to view its full description. You can find the task pane displayed to the right of the description.

  • Click Email Author.
  • The Email Author page with Email options is displayed.

  • Click Send. The confirmation message is displayed on the next screen.

  • Close by Me will not only send an email to user’s inbox in the system, but will also forward an email to their personal email address.

Adding a Message to Favorites

Using the features of the Posts module, you can locate a post, view, add your comments, and perform several other activities listed in the task pane. You need to register yourself to perform the tasks given in the task pane. By adding a post to your favorites, you can use the information in it for a future reference, or share it with your friends by forwarding it through Email. You can navigate to the Posts module after logging in. When you open a post to view its description, you can find a task pane displayed. Using the options of this task pane, you can mail the message in the post to a friend, reply to the author of the mail, report a post, and add a post to your favorites list.

To add a post to favorites:

  • Select a post of your interest and click the post link to view its full description. You can find the task pane displayed to the right of the description.

  • Click Add to Favorites on the task pane. The post is added to your favorite posts list and will be represented by red button with a heart. (If you want to remove a favorite, just click the red heart favorites button)
  • Click My Favorites- posts you favored of the Close by Me Actions tab in the right panel to view the posts.

  • The posts you added to the favorite posts list are displayed on the My Favorite page. You can click the post link or View to view the full description of the post. You can also choose to remove the post from the favorites list by clicking Remove from Favorites.

Flagging a Message

One of the features of the Close by Me community is the ability of users to monitor and identify messages which may be mis-categorized, prohibited or may be Spam.

You can report a post as following:

  • Mis-categorized - This indicates that the post is not added to the right category.
  • Prohibited - This indicates that the post does not satisfy/violates the terms and guidelines of the community.
  • Spam - This indicates that the post may be an advertisement for business or service completely unrelated to the category its posted in.

You can navigate to the Posts module after logging in. When you open a post to view its description, you can find a task pane displayed. Using the options of this task pane, you can mail the message in the post to a friend, reply to the author of the mail, report a post, and add a post to your favorites list. After you flag a message for one of the types: mis-categorized, prohibited, or Spam, you can not flag it again for the same type. 

If a message is flagged, you will see it indicated below the message itself, with the type of flag, and the total number of users in the community who flagged this message as this type.

To report a post:

  • Select a post of your interest and click the post link to view its full description. You can find the task pane displayed to the right of the description.

  • Select an option from the flag message area.
  • On the resultant page, add text in the comments area.

  • Click Report. The confirmation message is displayed on the screen.

Rating a Message

The features of the Posts module help you to locate a post, view, add your comments, and perform several other activities listed in the task pane. You need to register yourself to perform the tasks given in the task pane. You can navigate to the Posts module after logging in. When you open a post to view its description, you can find a task pane displayed. Using the options of this task pane, you can mail the message in the post to a friend, reply to the author of the mail, report a post, and add a post to your favorites list. You can rate a post based on the usability of the information provided in it. This helps the other users of the community to perform a quality search thereby saving time.

To rate a message:

  • Select a post of your interest and click the post link to view its full description. You can find the task pane displayed to the right of the description.

  • Select the stars in the Rate Message area. The stars are highlighted in gray as you move cursor over them. Once you select a star they are highlighted in yellow. The rating also appears above the post on the Post list page.

Locating on the Map

On Close by Me you can view the description of a post as well as view the location of the author of the post on a map. This helps you locate the proximity of the author from the place of your location. You can navigate to the Posts module after logging in.

To view the author's location on the map:

  • Do one of the following:
    • Click the location link on the top panel of the post, Or
    • Select a post of your interest and click the post link to view its full description. You can find the map link displayed below the post description area.

    • Click location/map link to view the location on Google Maps. You can find the route map displayed on the screen with clear instructions of travel from point 'A' to point 'B'.

Social Bookmarking a Message

Social bookmarking is one of the features offered by Close by Me for your online success. When you open a post to view its description, you can find the social bookmarking pane displayed below the description area. The options given on this pane help you to bookmark your post to different social networking sites. Friends who view your profile on a social networking site like Facebook may also view the bookmark and the overview of the post. Interested people can click the link to view the complete post description.

Close by Me has configured the following bookmarking options:

  • Linkarena
  • Folkd
  • Digg
  • Del.icio.us
  • Facebook
  • Reddit
  • StumbleUpon
  • Slashdot
  • Furl
  • Blinklist
  • Technorati
  • Newsvine
  • Blinkbits

To social bookmark a post:

  • Select a post of your interest and click the post link to view its full description. On this page, you can find the social bookmarking pane with the logos of social networking sites.

Note: You can bookmark a post if you are a registered user of the social networking site.

  • Click the logo of your networking site. You can see the bookmark of the post added to your profile page of the site you selected.

When users click this link, the application opens up within your networking site. Your profile visitors can view the complete description of the post, add their comments.

Explore

Explore is one of the unique experiences you will find in Close by Me. Once you find a post that has something similar to what you are looking for, or has merely caught your eye, you can change the focus of your current search, to use the message point as your central point of searching.  From explore you can use the current message’s location, and categorization to “look-around” for similar posts or items close by. Explore is another search feature you can find under a post description. You can explore a post based on the options such as category, postal code and the proximity level.

Adding a Comment

Using the features of the Posts module, you can locate a post, view, add your comments, and perform several other activities listed in the task pane. To add a comment you don't need to register or sign-in. However, you need to register yourself to perform the tasks given in the task pane.

To add a comment:

  • While looking at a message post in detail, scroll down to the comments section.
  • Enter your name, Email ID in the text fields.
  • Enter your comments in the text area. You can enter a maximum of 1,000 characters in this area.

  • Click Submit.
  • A confirmation message is displayed on the screen. You can see the comment added in the user comments area.
  • On this page, you can choose to edit or delete your comment.

Note: You cannot edit a comment after it is added to the application.
